We are not alone
Behind the clouds
I have two real life anecdotes to illustrate the title of today’s post and to show the myriad visible and invisible ways in which we are accompanied throughout the events of our lives. There are energies around us or within us, helping us, guiding us, sharing the magic of physical form and non-physical form.
In the process of grief, we may experience our spirit helpers; in moments of important decision-making help is available beyond the activity of our busy minds within the stillness of our being. In overcoming diversity, it is possible to sense the working of an invisible helper.
Before my Animal Wisdom story, I’d like to share other moment of magic I recently had the good fortune to experience during a visit to Switzerland. We were in Zermatt, hoping to see the Matterhorn in all its glory, but arrived at the train station into low-lying cloud and persistent rain.
After spending several hours exploring the village in the rain, we decided to return to the warmth of the hotel. While walking towards the hotel I started to feel we should head back to the bridge which was the best viewpoint of the mountain from the village. I looked at the sky and saw barely discernible lightening of the clouds. But the feeling in me was insistent, ‘go back and wait, the clouds are lifting.’ Something/someone was urging me to turn back.
I managed to persuade my husband we should go to the viewpoint. By the time we got there the rain had stopped and indeed the clouds were lifting. We watched as clouds drifted away from the mountain, gradually revealing more, until the whole veil lifted and there was the peak, the whole mountain revealed in its glory. It was a magical moment, particularly because of how I’d been led to return. And because of the words I heard (presumably from the same guide) while watching the beauty of the mountain appear: “Yes, just as you in all your majesty can be revealed if you drop the veil.”
Too often, we are clouded over by our daily lives as ‘human doings’: making plans, stuck in anger, resentment, fear or egoic ambition. Sometimes the clouds will take a long time to pass, but behind the veils our true spirit of enormous beauty and power lies in wait. It is not gone, only hidden.
Surrounded by assistants
There were three horses grazing peacefully in the paddock where my reiki table was set up. I explained to Nicky, a new client, that one or more of the horses may wander over at any time, perhaps sniff her, or just stand nearby to share reiki energy with her.
I nodded in the direction of Megan. “That’s the manager of the horses over there – she’ll intervene if any of the horses start testing their weight against the table, or wants to get a little taste of you! Or I might just have to lift my hand to move a head or shoulder. Do you feel OK about that?”
“Oh yes. I do hope that one of them does come to participate. But it’s a novelty to hear them munching on the grass. It’s lovely and quiet here.”
I started the session at Nicky’s head, to relax her and begin the flow of energy. A thought flitted into my head that the energy would be enhanced if another reiki practitioner was at her feet to help draw the energy through her central channel.
A few moments after the thought appeared, the horse we call Dr Alf ambled over and took his place at Nicky’s feet! In awe of how our thoughts met each other in silence, I could hardly wipe the smile from my face! Alfie and I worked together in peaceful stillness, until another synchronous moment when we both decided that the work was done in that area. I moved to work on another chakra and Alfie wandered off to graze again. Perhaps he felt I was competent enough to work on my own now!
A little while later there was some heavy energy to be cleared from the heart/solar plexus area of Nicky’s body. Here, I felt another presence. I sensed a Celtic spirit being, there to support Nicky to shift whatever was weighing heavily on her at the time. My second assistant of the day!
Alfie, again alert to what was happening energetically, returned at that time. He stood parallel to the table, his heart alongside Nicky’s. He stayed until such time as the energy flowed. I moved to close the session by integrating and balancing the energetic changes.
Alfie is a horse who has chosen to work with his natural healing wisdom. While all people and animals have the potential to be healers, some are more drawn to develop the capacity and to actively share it. Alfie is a stand-out in the herd. If he was human he’d be widely known and sought after.
He willingly engages with healing. He has spent years as a therapy horse, showing astounding capacity to work with counsellor and client, bringing forth what needs to be seen. Now he’s showing the same innate healing wisdom in the way he engages with reiki energy. He loves receiving the energy and he loves sharing it.

Wonderful read. Thank you for this.
A wonderful read. And an incredible reiki experience with Doc Alf, my ancestor and yourself Anne. It’s truly enlightening to read about the session from your perspective.
